Magic mushrooms treat depression in women with cancer

US researchers have found that magic mushrooms can help women deal with anxiety and depression related to cancer.

According to the British "Sky News" network, the researchers, affiliated with the University of Texas, said that traditional treatments to help women with this malignant disease adapt to their diagnosis and treatment may take a long time, while the effect of magic mushrooms is noticeably faster, as it may give "permanent benefits" from only once or twice.

After conducting experiments on a number of cancer patients, the team found that magic mushrooms (psilocybin) showed "promising" results in treating various psychological problems. The researchers said that this mushroom "modulates brain activity and improves mood." Women with cancer of the reproductive system, in particular, can face “different physical and psychological challenges,” especially for those diagnosed at a late stage, or those who suffer from chronic side effects of treatment, ccording to the study published in the “International Journal of Gynecological Oncology.”

The study team said that up to a quarter of ovarian cancer patients reported feeling depressed and anxious about dying. And a study published last year showed that small doses of "magic mushrooms" can help treat some mental health problems, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, without side effects. A study conducted in 2020 also confirmed the effectiveness of magic mushrooms in treating migraine disorders.

There are about 200 types of mushrooms that are classified under the name “magic mushrooms,” and they were named “magic” because they contain chemicals that affect the brain. Magic mushrooms grow all over the world.

Magic mushrooms, also known as psilocybin mushrooms, are a type of fungi that contain the psychoactive compound psilocybin. These mushrooms belong to the genus Psilocybe and are typically characterized by their hallucinogenic properties.
