Dr. Valentina Merkulova, an ophthalmologist, announced that it is necessary in the summer to wear sunglasses to protect the skin around the eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays.
In an interview with Gazeta.Ru, the specialist notes that sunglasses and sunscreens are equally important in summer.
"Excess UV rays accelerate age-related changes in eye tissue, which are a risk factor for a number of eye diseases and increase the risk of skin cancer around the eyes," she says.
According to her, sunglasses must have a suitable filter, so they must be purchased from optical stores only. Because when bought from other places, they can be dark but without protective filters, which is harmful to the eye.
She warns: "When wearing dark sunglasses, the pupils dilate, and in the absence of protective filters from ultraviolet radiation, a greater amount of these rays will enter the eye."
The expert points out that sunglasses are divided according to the degree of opacity of their glass into several categories: glasses of the first degree of opacity are suitable in cloudy weather, glasses of the second degree are suitable in sunny weather, glasses of the third degree are suitable for the beach and the fourth degree for the mountains.
She says: "When relaxing on the seashore and in mountainous areas, the sun's rays are reflected from the surface of the water and from the snow and rocks in the mountains and fall into the eyes in a double amount. Therefore, this preventive method should not be ignored. In addition, with these glasses it is possible to see the phenomenon of the solar eclipse."
