How to avoid, common mistakes in raising newborns 👶

Raising a newborn requires "thinking about multiple aspects, such as feeding, sleeping, changing diapers, and keeping them safe in general." However, it is undeniable that all parents may make some mistakes during this new journey.

In this regard, Leslie Bland, a midwife at My Expert Midwife, says: "We should be aware of the basics that we need to follow with a newborn. We know how to support their head, keep them warm, and change their diapers when necessary. But there are also things that we should absolutely avoid."

Leslie and eight other experts shared their thoughts on the most common mistakes parents make, the potential consequences of these mistakes, and how to avoid them.

- Following others

As a new parent, you may find yourself in a situation where you compare yourself to other parents. But Lucy Shrimpton, a sleep and wellbeing expert, urges parents to avoid this as much as possible. She says: “Don’t feel pressured to follow someone else’s routine or schedule. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to parenting. Trust your instincts and create your own rhythm.”

- Over-warming your baby

As winter approaches, be careful not to wrap your baby in too many blankets.

Celebrity midwife Pip Davies says: “Over-covering can lead to overheating, which is a risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). So it’s important to follow safe sleeping guidelines.”

- Over-dressing your baby

When out and about, don’t over-dress your baby in too many layers. “Always remove one layer when putting your baby in a baby carrier,” explains baby carrier expert Fern Hill.

- Smoking

Most parents know not to smoke around babies, but Lesley adds: “You should never touch your baby after smoking. Even if you smoke outside, wash your hands and change clothes before handling your baby.”

- Choosing only milk

Cow’s milk can be used in cooking from six months, but avoid giving it as a main drink until your baby is 12 months old, advises nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reid.

- Pet companions

Newborns should never be left alone with pets or in the bath. Lesley recommends that your baby is always supervised to avoid any accidents.

- Ignoring gut health

A newborn’s gut health is crucial to their development: “The gut microbiome has a huge impact on the immune system and brain development, so it’s important to consider introducing the right probiotics,” says Lucy Upton, a paediatric nutritionist.

- Napping while breastfeeding

Danielle Vesey, a lactation consultant, warns against sleeping on unsafe surfaces while breastfeeding. It’s important to stay aware of any risks.

- Ignoring pain

If you feel any pain while breastfeeding, it’s important not to ignore it. You need the right support from a lactation consultant to make sure everything is going well.

- Worrying about ‘too much love’

Love and physical contact strengthen the bond and soothe the baby. So hold and cuddle as much as you want.
