Reports have revealed the world's first private space station before its launch next year.
The Haven-1 space station is more modern and spacious than the International Space Station, as it contains large beds, a modern gym and maple wood interiors, according to the American space company Vast, which collaborated with world-famous designer Peter Russell Clark to design it.
Clark, who previously worked with Apple, said: "Astronauts living in zero gravity pose unique design challenges. Creating a highly efficient and naturally comfortable environment leads to completely new results. The interiors of Haven-1 are unprecedented, carefully and sensitively designed to ensure that its occupants thrive in space."
Today, Vast unveiled the final design for Haven-1, the world's first commercial space station, setting a new standard. Guided by visionary designer Peter Russell-Clarke and astronaut Andrew Feustel, we’re pushing the boundaries of life in space with human-first design led by.
From the outside, Haven-1 looks like any other spacecraft, but the interior is warmer than the International Space Station.
Vast explained that Haven-1’s interior surfaces are soft and padded to provide an extra element of safety for the crew and visitors as they fly around. There are four private crew quarters above and below the main corridor, providing astronauts with a space to rest.
The space company said these expanded personal quarters, which are slightly larger than the crew quarters on the International Space Station, are uniquely designed to allow for changing, entertainment, online communication with loved ones back on Earth (thanks to SpaceX’s Starlink connectivity), and most importantly, a good night’s sleep.
With no gravity to keep you horizontal, sleeping in space has been a challenge for astronauts in the past. However, Vast hopes to address that problem with a patent-pending sleep system.
“This system is roughly the size of a queen-size bed, and provides a customized amount of even pressure throughout the night, accommodating both side and back sleepers,” the company explained.
The main common area is 24 cubic meters in size and will serve as a multifunctional hub where the crew can eat, exercise, conduct lab experiments, and relax.
It’s worth noting that veteran NASA astronaut Andrew Feustel, who has logged more than 225 days in space on the ISS, has provided Vast with important advice on the space station.
“From communications and interaction, to private space and connecting with others on board the station, to advancing human progress on Earth and beyond, every detail has been designed with the astronaut experience at the core of our work,” Feustel said.
While the cost of building Haven-1 has not been disclosed, Vast says it will invest around $1 billion by the time the station launches.
