More than a year after a murder in Italy, the crime is closer to being solved thanks to a selfie video taken by the suspected perpetrator.
Various Italian media outlets reported on Sunday that the victim's father, after several unsuccessful attempts, was able to unlock his son's smartphone. He discovered a video the suspect had recorded of himself after the crime.
The case made headlines last year: A 32-year-old man was found stabbed in late April 2024 in the town of Vilfranca Padovana, a town of 10,000 people in northern Italy.
An acquaintance of his, two years his senior, quickly became a suspect and was subsequently arrested. All police attempts to unlock the victim's iPhone, possibly to find evidence about the perpetrator, proved unsuccessful.
Eventually, the police returned the smartphone to the father, who was able to unlock it using the correct PIN.
According to a report by the local newspaper Il Gazzettino, the video, which lasts only a few seconds, was recorded at the crime scene, around the time of the crime.
The selfie video reportedly shows the suspected perpetrator saying some slurred sentences before running his hands through his hair.
The trial of the 34-year-old man, who is currently in custody, is scheduled to begin next September. The man must appear in court on murder charges.
The killer faces a long prison sentence. Due to drug problems, he had been in a rehabilitation clinic shortly before the crime.
The suspected perpetrator and the victim had known each other since childhood. They had reportedly had several previous fights.
