When wolves started threatening his flock in Austria, shepherd Rudolf Schubach didn't wait for someone else to solve the problem ā he invented his own solution.
Over three years of research and experimentation, Schubach designed a lightweight mesh vest fitted with sharp spikes, worn directly on the sheep. His logic was simple: wolves are intelligent animals, and once they feel pain from attacking an armored sheep, they won't try again.
The invention sparked debate among farmers. Critics pointed out that wool could get tangled in the mesh over time, and that wolves might simply target unprotected parts of the sheep like the head or legs. The cost of equipping large flocks was also raised as a major obstacle.
Despite the skepticism, Schubach stood firm. One of his sheep wore the armor for several consecutive days, moved freely and grazed normally with no issues. He has temporarily paused his trials in Austria but continues searching for new locations to test his invention ā convinced that one day, sheep will face wolves in armor.
