Sharks in Brazil “Consume” cocaine...a shocking scientific test!

A group of scientists revealed that tests conducted on sharks in the waters off the coast of Brazil proved the presence of cocaine in their bodies.

Researchers have long said marine life may be affected by drugs dumped in the waters by smugglers, with tons of cocaine having been found in Florida and South and Central America.

A study by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil has found evidence that sharks are indeed affected by drugs polluting the ocean.

Scientists dissected 13 Brazilian bluntnose sharks purchased from small fishing vessels. These species spend their entire lives in coastal waters and are therefore more vulnerable to pollution.

Scientists found that the results of all 13 sharks were positive and indicated the presence of a drug.

This study represents the first to discover the presence of cocaine in sharks, and found that the substance was more prevalent in muscle tissue than shark livers.

However, the study said the scope of research is "very limited" and that cocaine's effect on aquatic life is not fully known.
