Despite the popularity of matcha and its association with numerous health benefits, such as promoting heart health, supporting liver function, and aiding weight loss, health experts warn that excessive consumption can cause serious health problems, most notably iron deficiency anemia.
Matcha, like green tea, is extracted from the Camellia sinensis plant and is known for its high concentration of antioxidants. Its popularity has boomed in recent years, with most cafes now offering it as an alternative to coffee.
However, with its increasing consumption, reports have begun to emerge indicating potential side effects, especially in people with naturally low iron levels or those following a vegan diet.
Lynn Chazin, a 28-year-old nurse and lifestyle and beauty influencer, recently shocked her TikTok followers when she revealed that her favorite beverage—matcha—had caused her severe anemia.
“My iron levels dropped dramatically because of matcha,” Chazin said. “I became severely anemic.”
She explained that she was already suffering from low iron levels, but her symptoms, including extreme fatigue and itchy skin, had recently intensified as she increased her daily matcha consumption.
She added, “The doctor confirmed that my increased matcha consumption was the cause, as nothing else in my daily diet had changed.”
Dr. Sophie Dex says, “Drinking too much matcha can lead to iron deficiency anemia, especially in vegans or those with already low iron levels.”
She adds, “The more often you drink matcha, especially with or immediately after meals, the more likely it is to reduce your absorption of iron from food.”
