On December 21, 2024, a boat capsized near Bawley Point, south of Ulladulla on New South Wales' south coast. Three individuals were found clinging to the overturned hull.

Emergency services, including police, surf lifesavers, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, responded promptly. All three men were wearing life jackets and were safely winched to safety. Chief Inspector David Cockram emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets, stating that without them, the outcome could have been tragic.

This incident occurred just hours after a 66-year-old woman tragically drowned at Werri Beach near Gerringong. A 13-year-old surf lifesaver attempted to rescue her, but despite CPR efforts, she could not be revived. Steve Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving NSW, highlighted the need for safety awareness during the busy holiday season, following multiple recent drownings, including one at Crescent Head.

These events underscore the critical importance of wearing life jackets and swimming at patrolled beaches, especially during the holiday season.
